Have you ever wanted to talk to a super smart guy about the research that is happening around diabetes? I'm talking about prevention, treatments, cure, artificial pancreas, responsive insulin, beta cell therapy, encapsulation... theres so much to choose from and Albert speaks about them all like an expert (because he is!).
Albert Hwa, Ph.D. joined the JDRF in January 2007 as the scientific program manager in the beta cell therapies program, for which he develops and manages research initiatives related to islet transplantation, bioengineering, stem cell research, cell encapsulation, and cellular reprogramming.

Anisha Dharshi is a person living with type 1 diabetes who happens to also be the director of type 1 diabetes programs for the American Diabetes Association. Anisha holds a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins and has focused her career on working in healthcare. She has worked for the British Medical Journal, the Institute of Medicine and the National Quality Forum. Anisha's entire family lives with diabetes; her sister has Type 1, her father was diagnosed with T1 late in life and her mother has type 2 diabetes.
Anisha may have a serious life and a serious education but she is a light-hearted and upbeat individual who is crazy fun to talk to. I get it if you initially hear that the Director of Programs from the ADA is the guest on episode 40 and think, "boring"... but no, no... Anisha rocks! Interesting aside, spellcheck changes her name every time you type it, this took three times as long to write because of that... :)

An hour long conversation with Insulet's Chief Commercial Officer Shacey Petrovic. Shacey answers questions from the diabetes community and from me in this candid chat. We talk about Medicare, Freestyle test strips, Artificial Pancreas, Omnipod/Dexcom partnership, new PDM status, the Forbes piece that paints Omnipod as being in jeopardy of being "out of the insulin pump market" in one year and much more.

Freestyle Test Strip Info that Shacey spoke of...
OmniPod® patients now have access to a dedicated toll-free Helpline if they should experience any co-pay or coverage issues with their FreeStyle® Test Strips (877-654-9975). Upon dialing this number, the patient will reach a knowledgeable customer support team member to help them navigate through their test strip coverage.
As of November 2nd, patients who call the support number will also be offered the Prior Authorization Assistance Program (PAAP). The goal of the PAAP is to ensure easy access to FreeStyle test strips for new (and existing) OmniPod patients. With patient consent and HIPAA authorization, the following steps will be taken to execute on the PAAP:
1. Abbott will conduct a full Benefit Investigation.
2. From there, Abbott will both facilitate/assist in reaching out to the patient's payers and HCP to obtain the Prior Authorization (Appeal or Tier Exception) approval.
3. If approved, Abbott will be sending the PA approval and Rx referral to the patient's pharmacy of choice.
. If denied, Abbott will be driving patients to participating pharmacies (major retail chains). Eligible patients may be able to benefit/receive automatic and affordable co-pay savings at participating pharmacies.

Jenna is an eighteen year old college student who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of thirteen. To say that Jenna has 'it' together is, well, the understatement of all understatements. Seriously, I hope my kids turn out half as well. Heck, I wish her parents raised me....
"The interesting thing about (having) diabetes is that you start to understand other people's problems more clearly..."
Jenna talks about her diagnosis and how her mom handled the life change. Find out about decisions that she's made on her own to help her blood glucose levels and much more. Listening to Jenna will leave you comforted if you're the parent of a child with type 1 and perhaps inspired if you are living with it yourself.
Check Jenna out on Instagram, she's at diabetestips and look for a guest blog post from her soon on Arden's Day. I need a kid to explain this Instagram thing to me, I'm apparently not doing it well.

I have a lot of phone conversations with readers of my type 1 diabetes parenting blog, Arden's Day because often questions are easier to answer in person than they are by email. Just 24 hours after the surprise FDA approval of the Dexcom G5 continuous glucose monitoring system, I spoke with Dexcom EVP Steven Pacelli and asked him all of the questions that were submitted to me by my blog readers and podcast listeners - I even threw in a few of my own.
If you're wondering about Dexcom G5 upgrading, cost, out of pocket, battery life and more? This is the podcast for you!
Steven was named Executive Vice President of Strategy and Corporate development in 2012. Mr. Pacelli has served in roles of increasing responsibility with Dexcom since 2006, including its Chief Operating Officer from 2010 to 2012, its Chief Administrative Officer from 2008 to 2010, its Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs from 2007 to 2008, and its Vice President of Legal Affairs from 2006 to 2007.

Kris Freeman, four-time Olympic cross country skier, comes on the podcast to share his take on the controversial remarks posted on Twitter by the CrossFit CEO in 2015, and why Kris thinks Type 1 diabetes should be renamed. Scott and Kris discuss the challenges of living and working with others who have preconceived stereotypes about what it means to live with Type 1 diabetes. Kris describes the early years of his management and how he manages now in order to compete at the Olympic level in cross country skiing. Scott shares his thoughts on why having stable blood sugars are important and why he works so hard to keep Arden’s blood sugar stable overnight. They discuss Arden’s latest A1C and Scott’s management style and the techniques he uses to achieve it. Scott and Kris discuss physical activity and living well.

Beth and Tung Tran's son Jack was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes six months ago at the age of two (While Beth was 8 months pregnant).
This episode is a fantastic look into the first few months of life with type 1 diabetes as well as an eye opening (for me) look about how things have changed since Arden's diagnosis.
I was heartened by how the Tran family is embracing diabetes technology and the diabetes community online. Moreover, I was elated to hear about how their physicians made the family aware of technology and Internet based type 1 diabetes communities.
Spend an hour with this delightful family - learn which Pixar movie characters their kids are named after, feel their positive outlook, hear how a Facebook group has helped them with T1 and immerse yourself in their geekdom (Tran mention's Princess Leia's bikini a lot).

I received this note from Stefanie: "I wanted to volunteer to do one of your conversational podcasts. I come across a lot of t1d parents that are intimidated by travel & my family loves to travel. We traveled internationally & domestically before diagnosis and have continued that lifestyle since diagnosis. For example, my daughter, Randi, was diagnosed 1 year ago in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and we went on a cruise 8 weeks after diagnosis. I'm hopeful that sharing our experiences will help make parents more comfortable with the idea of traveling the globe with their t1d kiddos."
