Rachel Morgan is a tenacious type 1 diabetes mom who did not give up when doctors instructed her to discontinue using her son Henry's insulin pump and continous glucose monitor becasue of his severe adhesive allergy. Instead she turned to the diabetes community online and found an answer to Henry's serious problem - this ain't no contact dermatitis. Be sure to read Rachel's guest blog post on Arden's Day to see Henry's rash and find out how they relieved it. It is a fantastic read for anyone who wears a medical device that uses adhesive.

Fresh from his appearance at SXSW (South by Southwest) John Costik spends the evening talking about the Nightscout Project with me on the Juicebox Podcast. Find out how a single idea turned into a type 1 diabetes community movement that has changed lives, effected the FDA and continues to grow by leaps and bounds with the help of it's passionate volunteers.

Nightscout (CGM in the Cloud) is an open source, DIY project that allows real time access to a Dexcom G4 CGM from web browsers via smartphones, computers, tablets, and the Pebble smartwatch. The goal of the project is to allow remote monitoring of the T1D’s glucose level using existing monitoring devices.

This episode wasn't easy to research but the end result was a better understanding of how Arden's Day went from a type 1 diabetes advocacy website to the patient blog that it is today. Spoilers, it was a video of Arden describing a low blood glucose induced seizure that revealed the power of transparency and all of the good that comes from not hiding even the ugliest truths about living with type 1 diabetes.
