D-Mom Nicki Nichols was searching for help when she experienced a roadblock with her daughter's state provided health insurance so she sent an email to Rep. Jeffrey Guice to ask for help getting her type 1 diabetes supplies... his response was, lets say, less than helpful. I assume that you've heard the saying, "Don't poke the bear"?
Maybe it should be... "Don't poke the diabetes mom"

Sure perhaps when you hear 504 plan it doesn't sound too exciting, but you know what is exciting? Proper care for your chid while they are at school. Type 1 diabetes is a 24 hour a day disease and no one can afford to ignore a third of those hours just because they happen at school. There is however a way to maintain the level of care that you have at home while you little (or not so little) one is away at school - get a 504 plan! And it's easier than you think.

Bethany, mom of 4-year-old T1D Will, finds the nerve to be bold with insulin after a phone call with Scott. Scott gives her some basic steps to take to stop the spikes she sees in her son's blood sugar. After a short period of time, Bethany sees success by pre-bolusing and addressing high blood sugars sooner. She shares her son's initial T1D diagnosis story, her stress over his uncontrollable blood sugar, and her path to finding answers.

Emily says that she resents her son's type 1 diabetes and the feeling is getting worse. We talked about how she felt and it seemed to me that her anger is partially fueled by the guilt she experiences when she struggles to manage her sons BG levels.

I have a lot of phone conversations with readers of my type 1 diabetes parenting blog, Arden's Day because often questions are easier to answer in person than they are by email. But now that I have a podcast I'm recording these very personal conversations whenever the other party is interested in doing so. When Jess Grim contacted me and wanted to talk about the difficulties that she was having with her daughter's school I quickly asked if she wanted to be on the Juicebox Podcast - huge thank you to Jess for coming on and speaking so openly!

Beth and Tung Tran's son Jack was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes six months ago at the age of two (While Beth was 8 months pregnant).
This episode is a fantastic look into the first few months of life with type 1 diabetes as well as an eye opening (for me) look about how things have changed since Arden's diagnosis.
I was heartened by how the Tran family is embracing diabetes technology and the diabetes community online. Moreover, I was elated to hear about how their physicians made the family aware of technology and Internet based type 1 diabetes communities.
Spend an hour with this delightful family - learn which Pixar movie characters their kids are named after, feel their positive outlook, hear how a Facebook group has helped them with T1 and immerse yourself in their geekdom (Tran mention's Princess Leia's bikini a lot).

I received this note from Stefanie: "I wanted to volunteer to do one of your conversational podcasts. I come across a lot of t1d parents that are intimidated by travel & my family loves to travel. We traveled internationally & domestically before diagnosis and have continued that lifestyle since diagnosis. For example, my daughter, Randi, was diagnosed 1 year ago in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and we went on a cruise 8 weeks after diagnosis. I'm hopeful that sharing our experiences will help make parents more comfortable with the idea of traveling the globe with their t1d kiddos."

Fresh from his appearance at SXSW (South by Southwest) John Costik spends the evening talking about the Nightscout Project with me on the Juicebox Podcast. Find out how a single idea turned into a type 1 diabetes community movement that has changed lives, effected the FDA and continues to grow by leaps and bounds with the help of it's passionate volunteers.
What is the Nightscout project?
Nightscout (CGM in the Cloud) is an open source, DIY project that allows real time access to a Dexcom G4 CGM from web browsers via smartphones, computers, tablets, and the Pebble smartwatch. The goal of the project is to allow remote monitoring of the T1D’s glucose level using existing monitoring devices.
