In episode 72 I spoke to Ryan Hansen who unexpectedly lost his wife Tara during childbirth. This bonus episode is a companion to Ryan's story.

Maternal mortality is more prevalent in the United States then you may expect and taking the time to understanding the simple steps that will help to avoid this unnecessary and catastrophic lose of life is beyond important. In this bonus episode I speak with Dr. Priya Agrawal from Merck For Mothers to discuss what you can do to ensure a safer birthing experience.

The Tara Hansen Foundation has been established to honor Tara's life and memory. Our goal, continue to act in the same selfless manner in which Tara lived her life. We are dedicated to the advancement of maternal health awareness. The foundation believes that expecting parents deserve equal education on the risks associated with the mother as well as the child. We also plan to continue giving back to the school where she worked. Most importantly, we hope to keep Tara's positive spirit and appreciation for life alive.

When Ryan Reed was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 17, his doctor told him that he would never race a stock car again. In his interview with now 21-year-old Ryan, Scott and Ryan discuss what it was like to win the 2015 NASCAR Infinity Series, the unique way Ryan manages his diabetes while racing, and how Ryan turned his diabetes diagnosis and racing career into advocacy for people with Type 1 diabetes.

This episode wasn't easy to research but the end result was a better understanding of how Arden's Day went from a type 1 diabetes advocacy website to the patient blog that it is today. Spoilers, it was a video of Arden describing a low blood glucose induced seizure that revealed the power of transparency and all of the good that comes from not hiding even the ugliest truths about living with type 1 diabetes.
