In episode 72 I spoke to Ryan Hansen who unexpectedly lost his wife Tara during childbirth. This bonus episode is a companion to Ryan's story.

Maternal mortality is more prevalent in the United States then you may expect and taking the time to understanding the simple steps that will help to avoid this unnecessary and catastrophic lose of life is beyond important. In this bonus episode I speak with Dr. Priya Agrawal from Merck For Mothers to discuss what you can do to ensure a safer birthing experience.

The Tara Hansen Foundation has been established to honor Tara's life and memory. Our goal, continue to act in the same selfless manner in which Tara lived her life. We are dedicated to the advancement of maternal health awareness. The foundation believes that expecting parents deserve equal education on the risks associated with the mother as well as the child. We also plan to continue giving back to the school where she worked. Most importantly, we hope to keep Tara's positive spirit and appreciation for life alive.

I can say without one ounce of exaggeration that 14 year old Ian may be the most mature kid that I have ever met. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 12 Ian came on the podcast to talk about why he isn't more open with the fact that he has type 1 but by the end of the podcast... he may have changed his mind.

I give you playwright, actor, student, philosopher and lover of capers... Ian Gadapee

Sometimes my conversations just begin with a hello and I have no idea where they will go... this one went in all kinds of great directions. Sharon and I talked type 1 diabetes parenting, managing at school, diagnosis and a lot more.

If it an anvil would have fallen on Karalyn during this interview (like in the cartoons) I would not have been surprised.

An interesting story of an incorrect diagnosis that took about every twist and turn that you can imagine. Type 2, type 1, LADA?

D-Mom Nicki Nichols was searching for help when she experienced a roadblock with her daughter's state provided health insurance so she sent an email to Rep. Jeffrey Guice to ask for help getting her type 1 diabetes supplies... his response was, lets say, less than helpful. I assume that you've heard the saying, "Don't poke the bear"?

Maybe it should be... "Don't poke the diabetes mom"
